We kickstarted our SSDB for the year 2018 by involving our parents on Earth Day! On 20th April 2018, we decided to do a craft on Earth Day. Our activity for the day was to create plant balls. The classes made plant balls by using shredded recycled paper and soaked it in water. They then rolled the whole mixture into a ball and added seeds inside.
We had parents to join in the celebration and introduce to children on how to create the plant ball. We allowed the whole mixture to dry for over a week before we went outdoors to plant them. Parents from our Parent Support Committee helped to request access from Clementi Heights RC for the neighbourhood garden outside our centre for our children to explore and plant their own seeds.
On 17 April 2018, We encouraged our children to clean up the garden before we planted our plant balls. We brought trash bags from school and children knew what to do right away. We allowed children to explore the garden while cleaning it up and some of them managed to even find snails!
On 27 April 2018, we brought our children back to the garden to plant our plant balls. They used the equipment in the garden to dig and water the plant balls before we returned back to school to have a talk about it. It was an amazing experience for both the children and Teachers as this was our first time planting in the neighbourhood garden! We will be going to the garden daily/weekly to check on the progress of our plants.
