During the June Holiday Programme, the children participated in a 4-week project here they explored the rich dicersity of Singapore’s four main racial groups: Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian. Each week, the children delved deeper into the unique cultural traditions of one group, and on Fridays, they engaged in a special cooking activity.
These hands-on sessions allowed them to prepare a dish representative of the week,
-
Kueh Dadar for Malay week (grated coconut)
-
Mango Lassi for Indian week (mangoes)
-
Sandwich Making for Eurasian week (wholemeal bread)
-
Guodong Jelly for Chinese week
Our K1s getting hands-on making their own sandwich!
Our K2s doing the same and tasting the sandwich they made!🥪
As the children prepared these dishes, they engaged in lively discussions about the origins of various ingredients. From wholemeal bread to grated coconut and mangoes, they learned where each ingredient originated, gaining a deeper appreciation for the journey these foods take before reaching their kitchens. This interactive experience helped the children understand not only the cultural significance of these dishes but also the processes involved in preparing them, enriching their knowlegde of the ingredients and how they connect to different cultures.
