In our previous post, “Where does food come from? - Planting shallots at home and growing vegetables at school”, we mentioned that children planted shallots with their family members and grew vegetables in school with their friends and teachers. Children had a lot of fun, gained new insights into a farmer’s life and got to experience it through planting their own vegetables!
Concurrently, children got to learn about processed crops and found out how it can be turned into food. To explore this concept, we decided to make new food from our own plants! We continued to look after our vegetables for a few more weeks before harvesting it. As Radish and Amaranth needed more time to grow, we decided to cook our spring onion (Shallots) and pea shoots vegetables only! Along the way, we also learned about soybean and how it can be turned into food so we decided to make new food with that too! We gave our kitchen aunty pea shoots vegetables, and she included that in our lunch! As for the spring onions, we decided to make spring onion pancakes with it. It turned out amazing and the pancakes smelled really good! As for the soybeans, we thought of soybean milk so we decided to give it a try! Using a soybean machine, the beans were soaked and grounded into liquid, looking similar to milk!
We enjoyed both the soybean and spring onion pancake. The process to have our food ready was a long one (from growing the vegetables to harvesting) and this made us more appreciative with what we have, and thankful for the farmers who are working tirelessly everyday to grow and harvest food!
