As children learn more about the five senses, they are becoming more aware of the food that they are consuming. During meal times, teachers would often encourage children to eat the fruits and even explain the health benefits. Teachers often noticed that children would share and point out the seeds of the fruits to one another. Some children shared that “My mummy says I cannot eat the seed if not later my tummy will be painful” while others would reply, “My mummy says it is ok to eat the seed together with the fruit.”
Building on children’s conversations and interests, we decided to embark on a project to learn more about seeds and raise awareness of the importance of seeds in our daily life as well as how it contributes to a sustainable future for us.
Through this project, children demonstrated a sense of wonder and curiosity as they used their senses to feel and touch the seeds while exploring the different textures of seeds. They were intrigued to see how much the seed had grown into a plant and they were also able to share and discuss with one another on what are the things that will help the seed grow into a healthy plant. With this project, children gained awareness about different seeds, where they can be found, it’s growing process, and last by not least, the importance of seeds in the world we live in.
