Nursery 2 children of YWCA OUTRAM CDC embarked in a journey full of learning and inculcating different learning dispositions during the centre annual project last June holiday.
We started with a nature walk around the school to arouse children’s sense of wonder and curiosity. Children expressed their wonderment and shared their discoveries to the class.
Teacher why do we need plants? - Lim Jia En
The teachers planned together with the children on what they want to learn about plants and we started to make our mini garden.
There are some activities during the project:
Children explored and examined different parts of the plants; seeds of different fruits, various leaves and sunflower seeds.
A mini garden was constructed for the class to encourage children greater connection and responsibility for their environment.
Children were engaged in different simple experiments and investigations.
The simple experiments allowed children to discover new things and answer questions they have.
They were presented different ways to measure the growth of their plants in the garden as well as plants around the school using non standard measurement.
Children used unifix cubes to measure and compare the height of the plants.
Children created different artworks using variety of media, they created 2Dimensional, 3Dimensional artworks through stories, nature walks, and lessons they learnt.
The class enjoyed their very own healthy vegetable sandwich. The activity encouraged children to choose healthier choices that will have a profound effect on their well being.
The parent involvement activity is to integrate them into their child’s learning process.
To sum up the whole journey, children appreciate and reflected on their actions towards nature and understand plants more. The learning journey aided children to develop the learning dispositions.
