Our centre kicked off the SSDB project: ‘Marine Life, Come Alive’ by celebrating Earth Day on the 22nd of April 2019. We started with a pre-activity where we created a poster of our planet earth in our own classes.
We wanted to involve families so we decided to invite parents to create an ‘endangered animal costume’ using recycled materials together with their child over the long weekdnd. Children then wore their costumes to school to showcase in a Best Dressed competition.
Teachers also gave a short presentation on the history of Earth Day, the different animals that are extinct and endangered, the reason why they are declining in numbers, and, ways we can all help to protect these species.
The participating classes (K1 and K2) then proceeded to participate in some activities including topic discussion, reflective writing about the endangered animal their costume is based on, and craft work creating an eco-conscious headband.
Happy Earth Day!
