Save our Animals Today!

Our K1 and K2 students participated in the SSDB program, learning about the importance and protecting our animals!

The K1 children took part in the SSDB project under the topic of wildlife conservation. There were 3 phases to the project: 1. Introduction to wildlife conservation, 2. Zoo visit & booklet, 3. Poster making

For the pre-project, we introduced the broad topic through videos and songs about saving the animals on Earth. Children were invited to share their views on what they knew about why the animals were in danger after watching the videos.

For the main project highlight, we visited the Singapore Zoo. Children got to see the endangered animals, and filled up a booklet as they carried on the excursion. They got to know the different names of the animal species as they kept a lookout for them throughout.

After coming back from their field trip, the children carried on with their booklet. They recalled and reflected on what they had learnt. They were able to differentiate the right and wrong ways of how they can take care of the animals and their environment. They also used their creativity to draw a conducive and safe home for the animals. After doing so, they shared their ideas and imagination with the class.

For the post-field trip, children made posters to showcase their learning. They decided on a favourite animal to draw in a chosen habitat, and the message caption regarding conservation that they wanted to convey. Using their creativity, many different slogans came up. Children then partnered with their parents to enhance their posters by adding on scenery backgrounds, decorations and other elements.

Through the project, we learnt that animals are an important part of our ecosystem, and due to climate change, their lives are being affected drastically too. We should play our part to help save the Earth, no matter how small the action. Turning off the taps and lights, throwing away litter appropriately, and recycling are just some small gestures that can go a long way. Alone we can do little, but together we can do so much more!

The K2 students were introduced to the theme “Ocean Life”. We learnt about different sea creatures and their contributions to the aquatic ecosystem. As we dive deeper into our theme, we learnt that oil spills, pollution and other factors are affecting this ecosystem. During one of our DOW lessons, we discussed the effects of pollution and the impact it creates to both sea creatures and humans.

We went to SEA aquarium and learnt a lot more about sea creatures such as a sea star is actually not a fish! We also saw first hand how jellyfish look and move about, which is very similar to plastic bags. We learned that sea turtles often mistook plastic bags for jellyfish and would eat them, causing suffocation and eventual death.

Through these lessons and experiences, our K2 students have gained a deeper appreciation for ocean life and the challenges it faces. By understanding the impact of human actions on the aquatic ecosystem, they are inspired to take small but meaningful steps to protect marine life and preserve the beauty of our oceans for future generations.
