On 8 May 2018, the K1 children of Rainbow 3 launched SSDB with our vice-principal Aunty Joanna by planting a young guava tree!
We enjoyed working together to transplant the guava tree from its pot to our garden. There were many steps involved. This got us thinking and asking questions about trees.
In order to find out more, we invited an arborist to school.
An arborist is like a tree doctor. -Zi Bin
He helped us to identify interesting characteristics of trees in our school. Did you know the weeping fig in our backyard got its name from how its leaves bend downwards?
It looks like the tree is sad and crying, but of course it isn’t! -Rachel
The arborist also shared with us how trees continue to be useful after they die or get cut down.
At the end of the workshop, he allowed us to try out some of the tools including different saws, a throwline and throwball which helps an arborist to climb trees.
