My Jolly Educare: Journey towards learning about zero waste initiatives!

The kindergarten children learnt about how to make compost by using greens and browns found in our school’s backyard. To make our own simple compost bin, the children used gardening tools to mix the soil with small bits of food compost to help the process of breaking down the food particles easier.

The children collected these leaves and plucked the leaves under the supervision of our teachers to place it into a recycled styrofoam box. They layered the box with equal parts greens and browns as well.

The children also planted chinese flowering cabbage (also known as choy sum) so that the children can observe the cycle of growth and recycling the waste that comes from harvesting vegetables.

The children also got the chance to observe the growth of rambutans from March 2021 to July 2021 which was plucked from our rambutan tree! The children observed the colour changes from green to red, the size of growth and had a sensory experience by touching the hairy outer skin of the rambutan.

The fruits were peeled and given to the children to eat during lunch/snack time. The children were so excited to eat these delicious fruits! They have been waiting for some time to try them. Afterwards collecting the rambutan peels, we helped to grind them into small pieces to add them into our compost bins. The leaves used in the compost bins were from the rambutan branches themselves. Nothing was wasted during this activity, hence working towards ZERO waste! Kudos to all the children, staff and the principal for all the support and help to facilitate this learning journey!
