Hydroponics 2022
Title: LTH Hydroponics project 2022
Date : March - June 2022
Class: N2, K1 and K2
This is our journey of growing our own vegetables from seeds. We were greenhorns and hydroponics was totally new to us. Therefore we sought the help of experts who guided us through our journey.
A zoom session with the expert team helped us learn the basics of growing plant. After the session the class planted the seeds into the sponge (medium).
Learning1: We were so enthusiastic that we put more than 3 seeds in one small piece of sponge. This later resulted in overcrowding, so we learnt that only 3 seeds should go on a sponge piece.
We watered our plants and watched them grow. Measuring the growth of our saplings and recording it in our journal was our daily activity. Two weeks passed and we were getting impatient to transplant our saplings into the hydroponics equipment at the preschool. We were ready but the expert said that the plants were not ready yet. They needed to be in the tray for another week.
Learning 2: We left our plant outdoor in the shade and felt that our plants looked rather sickly. Later we found out that the saplings needed sun but needed to be protected from direct rain.
Meanwhile we tested our knowledge and increased our vocabulary to understand the experts.
Finally after a long wait of three weeks our saplings were ready to transplant and we got the school hydroponics system ready.
We transferred our small plants to the equipment and added liquid fertilizers to the main water source. Both air and water pumps were positioned in the main tank to provide the necessary air, water and fertilizer to our plants.
Within a week our plants started looking healthy and strong. Day on day we were happy to see the growing leaves and strong stems. The plants grew in our sheltered hydroponics system for 3 more weeks. By week 4th week our harvest was ready. We brought some leafy vegetable home to share the experience with our family and the remaining was given to our cook aunty to prepare for our meal.
This is not the end of our journey but the beginning as we have planted some more seeds in the tray to have another batch of fresh green vegetables from our kitchen garden hydroponics system.
