Armed with spades and their bright orange Start Small Dream Big hats, a group of K2 children set off from the centre early in the morning on 22 April 2022. Their destination was the plot next to the Senior Pacific Activity Centre and their mission to launch the Garden Harmony @ Tampines Central Blk 868A SSDS project.
With the help of a senior who volunteered as a gardener at Senior Pacific Activity Centre, the children put up the project signage at the plot before breaking ground to signify the official launch.
Under the guidance of the volunteer-gardener, the children planted the first crop under the project and watered the plants. It was a proud moment! The masks could not hide the lines of the children’s radiant smiles as they thought about the vegetables that would be harvested and shared with the elderly some months later.
The partnership with Senior Pacific Activity Centre allows children to interact with seniors outside their families. They can pick up new knowledge and skills from seniors and benefit from their wealth of life experiences. Such interactions also offer opportunities for teachers to share important issues with children. These include respect for the elderly, care for sickly and non-ambulant seniors, and creating a living environment that will allow the aged to live their remaining years in dignity. Getting children to think about them now helps lay the foundations of a more compassionate and caring society in the years ahead!
