In partnership with Start Small, Dream Big(SSDB), Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS), one of the goals of the IGP:All About Cassowaries is to build a rainforest made out of recycled materials. In order to do that, the teachers requested the parents to contribute some recyclable materials for the completion of this project.
One of the objectives is to fill this rainforest with children’s work by dipping into a level of creativity and fun in building this rainforest with the children. The K1 and K2 are working together in the completion of the rainforest.
In building the rainforest, the children were most definitely involved in the whole planning process as some of the ideas came from them. The teachers explained the importance of saving the earth and recycling to them in class and during their Monday assemblies, and of course, the 3Rs should not remain only in theory but most importantly, in application. The parents of the K1s and K2s were more than happy to oblige and contribute the recyclable materials that they have at home and at work, because of this, the children along with the teaches we’re able to start building the things found in the rainforest such as:creepy crawlers, snakes, frogs, vines, rocks, moths etc. The children were the ones who thought of using old newspapers to make rocks and paper plate for frogs. At first, the children wanted to make big worms until one of them argued while in the process of making the worms that it was too long and playfully commented that it looked like a snake–this however birthed the idea of making snakes instead of worms.
The children would also make use of their outdoor walk to pick up dried leaves and use that to make a nest. Some of them would even make use of the longer dried leaves and say that it’s where the birds can lay down and rest.
The main reason why BL 417 wanted to build a rainforest is because the Cassowary lives in a tropical rainforest in Australia.
