‘Little Mighty Us” launch party was on 5 April 2023 at the Community Garden at Compassvale Plain.
Children engaged in interesting discussions on the theme : Places in neighbourhood and community for Term 2. They shared that they are inspired by the collective effort put out by the people in the community to set up a community garden. The interest to visit this community garden near the neighbourhood was put into action.
A date was fix to visit the garden with a guided tour from the community people. Children and teachers explored various types of plants and flowers with their senses. They smelt, touched, observed, listened and tasted the plants grown in the garden. Children also brought back lots of organic vegetables for cookery lesson in school. They also smelt some leaves that gives out scent such as peppermint, lemongrass, basil and lavender. The next discussion led children to understand more about the therapeutic effect of scent gives out by plant such as lavender and other plants. There is plenty of research that suggests lavender has positive effects on mood, stress, anxiety, and tiredness. It is also a great pain reliever, can help with colic, diaper rashes and eczema, ease a cold, coughs and congestion, and naturally boost children’s mood and emotions.
So, GCDC children want to learn to make lavender soap, so as to teach children with autism to do the same. They brainstormed and came out with plans to share their knowledge of soap making with children with autism. The profits from selling of lavender soap will be used to buy things for these children at Rainbow centre. At the same time, lavender essential oils and lavender soap will also be contributed to the centre.
And below are the moments where our kindergarten children celebrated the launch of the project this year! More in-thing will be shared soon.
