Our school, PCF Sparkletots Preschool @ Ang Mo Kio-Hougang Blk 452 (DS) has chosen the topic “Caring For Our Environment” as our SSDB initiative for the year 2023. The theme of our project is “Waste is Not Waste until we Waste it”.
On 10 April, we released a letter to request recycled materials from the parents and children from April to June 2023. Every Friday, the children would bring items such as carton boxes, shoe boxes, ribbons, etc to school.
On 4th August 2023, we held our ‘Waste is Not Waste until we Waste it’ workshop in our own centre with our K1s and K2s parents/guardians. The main objective of this event was to showcase what our children had learnt for the past few months from this SSDB journey. To start off, we had a short MSD activity. Together with parents, children had to pick one item and decide whether they belong to the ‘Trash’ or ‘Recycle’ bin. Next, we moved on to the main activity. Using the recycled materials collected, children and parents worked together to create their own hampers to wrap the donations that they brought to gift to the elderly at THK Nursing Home.
It was a wonderful bonding time for the parents and the children as we saw lots of happy faces from the children!
With the leftover materials, the children also made one item to bring home from this event. We have children making bookmarks and pencil holders from tissue boxes and even binoculars with kitchen rolls! We teachers were very impressed indeed!
Another objective of this event was to raise awareness in our children about the importance of caring for our environment and doing good deeds. Now, I’m sure the elderly at the THK Nursing Home would be brimming with joy upon receiving the beautiful hampers made by our children and parents from PCF Sparkletots Preschool @ Ang Mo Kio-Hougang Blk 452 (DS)!
