During our class talks, the K1 children touched on the topic of upcycling. Apart from discussing about what upcycling means and the importance of upcycling, they also exchanged ideas on the ways that they can adopt to repurpose certain items. For example, some of the children talked about using used plastic bottles and paper plates to make a ring toss game whereas the rest shared about making toy houses or toy robots out of cardboard.
To promote upcycling, the children have decided to celebrate Hari Raya Puasa by making ketupats using various recyclables. And with that, to kickstart this activity, the children were first tasked to collect and bring common household recyclables such as empty toilet rolls and cereal boxes to school. Next, they were then actively involved in different activities such as painting, cutting, and putting the different materials together to make the ketupats.
Through this activity, the children learnt about the importance of taking care of the environment by minimising waste and established good habits like upcycling at a young age as a way of taking responsibility for the future of our planet.
