Learning Journey at The Food Bank Singapore.
As part of our effort to promote awareness of food insecurity in Singapore, our K1 and K2 Champs went on a learning journey at the Food Bank Singapore on 21st June 2023.
The Food Bank Singapore is a non-profit organisation committed to alleviating food insecurity and reducing food wastage in Singapore. Through their engaging and educational program designed for children, the Food Bank aims to cultivate a sense of empathy and responsibility towards the community’s food needs.
Our Champs embarked on an eye-opening warehouse tour led by knowledgeable staff members where they witnessed firsthand the scale of operations at the Food Bank. They observed the careful sorting and storage of donated food items, gaining insights into the logistics involved in managing surplus food and distributing it to those in need. They also witnessed the food that they have donated being sorted out at the warehouse for distribution.
Thereafter, our Champs attended an educational talk where they were introduced to the essential work carried out by The Food Bank Singapore. They learnt about the magnitude of food wastage in Singapore and its detrimental impact on the environment and society. Through interactive discussions and thought-provoking activities, our Champs were also surprised to see the other side of Singapore and gained knowledge of food insecurity, and learn that many individuals and families in Singapore struggle to access nutritious meals on a regular basis.
Lastly, our Champs were engaged in a reflection session, guided by facilitators who encouraged them to reflect on their own role in reducing food wastage. They were encouraged to adopt mindful eating habits, emphasizing the significance of not wasting food and requesting smaller portions if unable to finish a meal.
What is also significant to our Champs’ learning is understanding the type of food suitable for donation. The Food Bank Singapore provides a comprehensive list of food items that are highly beneficial to individuals and families in need. Champs were educated about the significance of donating staple items such as rice noodles, dried or canned food, biscuits, cereal, UHT milk, oil, condiments, and snacks, enabling them to make informed decisions when participating in future food drives or initiatives. Our Champs were able to develop an understanding of personal responsibility and are empowered to make conscious choices that contribute to a sustainable future.
