We kickstarted our school’s first year of participation in SSDB on Earth Day with a brief presentation to the K1 and K2 children on what SSDB is about. The children learnt to sing the SSDB theme song “Step-by-Step” and brainstormed for ideas on what they could do for different communities, both as individuals and as a school. They were given time to write/draw out their individual pledges and subsequently, we also discussed what we wanted to do together as a school.
Eventually, we narrowed our focus to caring for family and the environment and decided to conduct a beach cleanup at Sembawang Beach, with children enlisting the help of their fathers, as part of the school’s Fathers’ Day celebration event. The children and their fathers had a jolly good time sorting through and picking up trash from the beach, enjoying a well-deserved picnic together afterwards.
Afterwards, when asked to share their thoughts about our beach cleanup, many children expressed interest to do more small projects, this will be our goal for SSDB 2025!
