In conjunction with ‘Start Small Dream Big’ (SSDB), an initiative by the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA), the aspiring graduands of Sunflower Preschool at Punggol Field Walk embarked on a project entitled “Water: Conserve, Enjoy, Value.” The main goal of the project was to inculcate in the children the vitality of water on Earth and the need to conserve this indispensable natural compound. It was also held in observance of Singapore World Water Day.
Half of the preschool’s term two was devoted to learning the properties, importance and conservation of water. The children conducted experiments to understand the physical properties of water and its role in the environment.

Along the way, they discovered that water is an invaluable element of nature that moves continually on Earth through a cycle, via evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection.

They discovered that access to safe drinking water was once a major predicament in Singapore, and currently so in other parts of the world. Through field works such as a trip to Lorong Halus Wetland and NEWater Visitors Centre, the K2 children learned that fresh water can now be extracted from nature through a series of processes such as microfiltration, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet disinfection. They also discovered that fresh water from the sea can be extracted through desalination.

The class concluded the project by involving their families in making a water colour based poster on how to conserve water. The posters were displayed around the Punggol Coral Edge Community Garden.

The K2 children culminated their project in a mini exhibition on Friday, 27 May 2016, by showcasing their findings about water and imparting awareness on water conservation. Parents, Punggol 21 Community Partners, PUB representatives, ECDA officers and Sunflower Childcare Management were invited to the event.
