The children were curious to know more about how we can reduce pollution and how we should dispose of trash properly. First they were tasked with finding a recycling bin near their homes and learning how to throw trash properly. You can check out pictures taken by our parents!
Next was learning and exploring about different types of recycling bins in Singapore! Through our discussion and learning we learnt that electrical appliances cannot be thrown into recycling bins. We learnt that in Singapore we have a special bin for electrical appliances to be disposed safely as the batteries inside could prove to be toxic waste as well. So how do we go about throwing items into our recycling bin? While finding recycling bins near our homes, the children noticed that there was a signage pasted to explain what to do before disposing items into the bin! We learnt that
-
We need to wash our items first and ensure that it is dry before putting it into the recycling bin
-
We should not throw toys and clothes into the recycling bin but we can donate them instead
-
We cannot throw food items into the recycling bin or styrofoam food containers
To give children the opportunity to explore on their own to determine if the item can be recycled, different types of used items were brought in e.g. empty can drink, plastic bottle, egg carton etc.
In small groups the children set out to be recycling detectives and came to the conclusion that with the ♻️ logo, the item can be thrown and sorted into a recycling bin!
