Did you know other than cats and dogs, the Red-eared slider, a terrapin commonly found in Singapore’s pet shop, is also often abandoned?
As small as a 50 cent coin, the Red-eared slider is considered an adorable pet at first glance. However, it is capable of growing up to the size of a small dinner plate in just 2 to 3 months. Which might be one of the reasons why they are often abandoned in reservoirs and drains because ‘it is not cute anymore’.
In order to educate children on responsible pet ownership, we invited a guest speaker, Li May, together with her Red-eared slider which has been with her for 12 years. She shared on how she takes care of her pet, GoGo, and how she spends time with it at home. After a sharing session, the children got an opportunity to be up close with GoGo, the Red-eared slider.
After the session, the children had a discussion on responsible pet ownership, abuse and pet abandonment.
