Children were introduced to the 4Rs (Reduce, reuse, recycle, refuse). Teacher showed children videos of how items can harm the environment and taught them about the 4Rs. They were also taught on how they can apply it to their daily lives.
The children were taught how to reduce electricity wastage by reminding to switch off the lights and fan before outdoors. They also did up posters which are placed around the classroom to remind them the importance of saving electricity.
In line with what children are learning, children were taught about promoting zero food waste. With the help of Ah Ma from the centre, children managed to get scraps of vegetable stalk of the vegetable that they were consuming for lunch that day. Ah Ma demonstrated the replanting process to the children as well.
With recycled materials collected, children made a class mascot to represent themselves. They decided on the materials they would like to use for different parts of the robot. With the mascot coming to fruition, the children are more aware of how items can be recycled and used meaningfully.
Children were taught about bringing their recycled bag to the supermarket instead of using the plastic bag provided. They were taught about the concept of refusing, saying “NO” to plastic bags to save the Earth. Hence, teacher created an activity for children to bring their parent’s old clothes to school to make their own shopping bag. This is also a parent engagement program where children will use the bag when they go to the supermarket to purchase items.
