Our fortnightly virtual community outreach event for the month of June was hosted by the Teachers and Champs from the Nursery One Confidence class. The objective of this activity was to encourage the seniors to get Creative! Research has shown that creative activities are beneficial for brain activity and one of these are sensory play such as finger painting! Our Champs and seniors had great fun and numerous learning opportunities during this activity. Messy play like finger painting is important as it integrates spatial concepts, language and it is the most relax and creative way to express feelings.
At the start of the activity, our N1 Champs led by Nursery One Confidence Teachers, Ms Sandrel and Huang Laoshi, interacted with the seniors virtually, followed by a song and dance performance by our Champs.
The seniors were shown a video on how they could do dot painting using cotton buds or their fingers.
While our Champs had fun making different coloured dots on paper with the cotton buds, the seniors were painting dots with their fingers. They said, “It’s faster to paint with fingers!” Some even drew with their fingers. They proudly presented their paintings of butterflies, trees and flowers upon completion. We were amazed by their creativity!
For the seniors, being able to sit back and admire their artwork, is incredibly rewarding and a boost to their confidence.
Ah Gongs and Ah Mahs can be creative too!
As a closure to this activity, our Champs were proud to present their special gifts to the seniors – hand-painted fans!
