Our second online activity with the seniors at NTUC SAC – Selamat Hari Raya, Let’s Make a Ketupat was hosted by our principal Ms Jamie, K2 Gratitude Class Teachers, Tian Laoshi, Ms Miza, and their Champs. This was also in conjunction with our centre’s celebration of Hari Raya. Hari Raya Aidilfitri marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan and the start of a new month on the Islamic Calendar, Syawal. Hari Raya Puasa is a celebration of victory in completing the fasting and overcoming personal struggles during Ramadan. It is also a time for forgiveness and strengthening of bonds among family members and relatives.
The seniors at the SAC joined our Champs online in learning about Muslim customs and traditions such as the Islamic Calendar, Malay costumes, place of worship, Muslims’ traditional way of doing the handshake - “Salam” and how to address our family members in Malay.
We held an online quiz where the seniors were invited to name the pictures of some Malay delicacies. They were also invited to dance along with our Champs.
Lastly, the seniors and our Champs were engaged in a hands-on activity, “Let’s weave a ketupat!”
Our Principal also dropped by the NTUC SAC to distribute green packets to the seniors to wish them joy and peace for Hari Raya. (Malay: sampul hijau or sampul duit raya). This is a Malay adaption of the Chinese red envelope custom.
