Let's Save the Otters by Kinderland Preschool, Republic Polytechnic

This year Kinderland collaborated with Wildlife Reserve Singapore (WRS) to instil awareness on the importance of saving the otters. The children discovered how the otters suffered in the wild and learnt that they could also do their part to save them.

After two weeks of brainstorming sessions, the children decided to set up a fund-raising fair at the Centre’s premise to sell school-baked otter cookies, design otter photo frames, bags and containers to sell. Children decorated the photo frames using children’s thumbprints. Marker pens and acrylic paints were provided for children to design the tote bags. They also use pencils and paint to draw and paint on the container. This move was also in line with the ECDA “Start Small Dream Big” initiative for preschoolers.

On 21 July, the Centre was abuzzed with busy children honing their entrepreneurial spirit as they prompted and engaged the parents in the selling of their crafts. Parents were encouraged to support their little ones’ cause by purchasing coupons to buy the crafts and that their children’s efforts would go to WRS to adopt the otters at the Singapore Zoological Garden.

The project was very fruitful and meaningful as the children became more aware of the otters and what they could do to save them. Though small, the children’s efforts would go a long way to educate their parents on wildlife conservation of endangered animals and animals that were victims of human destruction of their natural habitats.

Children brainstorm on the type  of stalls to set  up.

Teachers  and children excitedly work hand in hand to get their stalls ready.

Parents support the children ‘s cause by purchasing the crafts made by them.
