SUNSHINE KIDS CARE CENTRE @ PUNGGOL launched the ‘SSDB 2022, OUR FAMILY OUR COMMUNITY’ on 12th May 2022 by distributing the SSDB goodie bags and hats to the children. Ways to care and save the environment were introduced as well through film showing/documentaries and story books such as My Earth, My Home: A Kid’s Book About Why Protecting Our Planet Matters. This kickstart the project: SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT and realign our mindset that the children could do or contribute to save our earth the best we could.
This year, as we embark in planting, caring for the plants, composting fertilizers for the plants, We encourage the practice of zero wastes at the Centre, and that parents could eventually be advocates of ‘wastes are not wasted in our community’ and, therefore, making it a better place for all of us. With this, we are in the process of working with NPARKs and BOTANIC GARDENS as our Community Partners.
We started with the intention to create awareness to save the earth by planting more plants and keeping our environment clean and green. Children identified the plants that grow either on water or soil. They planted, watered , cared and placed them under the sun. Even the vegetables, such as onions and garlic, were also placed in water as they observed how they sprouted. To raise the children’s awareness and learning, a virtual and on-site field trips to gardens were organised. “Oh What Farm!”, an online virtual field trip, and Jacob Ballas, an on-site field trip, were arranged to better equip the children to understand and appreciate what a real and actual garden is like - its beauty and flora.
Children learnt to value, care and respect the environment as they work on simple things their little hands can do to make the community a better place.
It is often heard if you want to change the world to be better, let it begin with me, us and our family. No one can do Everything but EVERYONE can do SOMETHING.
