Since our Virtual Launch Party, the children started to get busy in preparing for a special in-house event called SSDB Art Showcase which was collaboratively celebrated with Racial Harmony Day on the 21st July 2022.
In preparation for the Art showcase, the children along with their Mother Tongue Teachers has been preparing several art displays that showcases the cultural elements of Chinese, Malay and Tamil respectively. The children get their hands busy during their Mother Tongue class to prepare for the showcase whilst learning about the elements of each art.
To celebrate Racial Harmony Day with a little twist, the children were also involved in a special activity, situated at each of the booth which was facilitated by our Mother Tongue Teachers. The idea of the activity is to allow children to experience the feeling of being physically disabled. As such, children were involved in activities which requires them to be blindfolded to experience the feeling of being blind, wearing ear muffs to experience having hearing impairment and stamping using their elbow as an experience of those who are physically challenged or disabled.
It was truly a fun and exciting experience for the children as well as the teachers in the centre as the activities conducted were very meaningful.
Let’s take a look at some of the photos to see what goes behind all the fun times, shall we?
Preparation photos for the Art Showcase where the Chinese children made Plum Blossom, Pussy Willows & Fan.
The Malay Children were involved in making their Batik Inspired T-shirts, Abstract Batik Crayon-resist Art and Wau (kite) making.
The Tamil children made colourful garlands, kolam and decorative oil lamps.
On 21 July 2022, we celebrated Racial Harmony Day. Children had the opportunity to view the Art Showcase made by their fellow friends. It was also an opportunity for the children to show appreciation to one’s culture and diversity.
Here, children visited the Malay Corner Art Showcase which was facilitated by Cikgu Adilla. Children learned about some of the Malay Cultural Elements which includes musical instruments and traditional games.
The children also visited the Chinese Corner Art Showcase which was facilitated by Gu Laoshi. Children showed appreciation towards the artworks made by their fellow peers in school and even applaud them for their hardwork!
The children visited the Tamil Corner Art Showcase which was facilitated by Asiriya Shanthi. Children were in awe when they saw the colourful garlands, kolams and decorative oil lamps!
As the project aims to allow children to show appreciation , love and respect towards people who are physically disabled, our teachers had planned a few special activities that allows children to experience how it feels like to be visually impaired, physically disabled and having hearing impairment.
“I colour with my eyes closed just like the blind”.
“I stamp using my elbow just like the physically disabled”.
“I colour with my ears closed just like the deaf”.
It was a successful celebration and the children gained plentiful of insights and even developed a sense of empathy towards others. Truly, “Together as One, Same or Different”!
