Learning Disposition: Engagement
Children learnt about the gardening tools. Using the PETAL pedagogical approach, children went through the sequential steps in learning: playing, exploring, thinking and apply learning.
K1 class visited the community garden and observed the gardeners at work. They then role played as gardeners. Using assorted gardening tools like the trowels and hand claw rakes, to children lossen the soil.
They worked in small groups to explore the different parts of garden. They observed some garden bugs. While digging the soil, children chanced uoon earthworms in the soil. They also noticed the butterflies and bees flying among the flowers. Some children observed ants crawling on the tree trunks.
Children went back to class, they were tasked to think about the gardening tools and how the gardeners use them for.
Adam shared gardeners use watering cans and water hose to water the plants.
Zi Yan shared we use the hand rake to lossen the soil.
Roxanne shared that the trowels scoop the soil just like how we use spoons.
Children then applied their new learning and used recycled materials to make 3D gardening tools. They presented the crafts in class and explained how gardeners use them.
Through the series of meaningful planned activities, children learnt through play. They displayed good learning disposition of engagement by participating actively in the class activities. Good job, K1 children!
