Celebrating Diversity: Igniting our Kampung Spirit

What is uniquely Singaporean? What does it mean to be a true Singaporean? One very uniquely Singaporean thing is having a multi-cultural nation where everyone has equal opportunity, regardless of race, language or religion.

As quoted from our President Halimah Yacob, “We want our children to be aware that we live in a diverse society and that our difference is a strength and a cause to celebrate. Schools will have to think of how to instil the teachings of these values in their curriculum so that students can better appreciate the meaning of diversity…”

This August, our children were educated on the topic of diversity, where they brainstormed and discussed in depth with each other on their Singaporean identity.

On 6 August, our school celebrated National Day cum Racial Harmony Day where everyone came dressed in traditional costumes or red and white to signify us being Singaporeans. We borrowed books about Singapore and different cultures from NLB and read it to the children. The children watched a short video on how Singapore is founded, as well as singing and dancing to the new National Day theme song “The Road Ahead”. They also took the time to do up a national day craft. The children had fun playing different traditional games such as Zero Point and Chapteh!

To end off our SSDB project, our K1 and K2 children had a hand in making a Chinese sweet dessert called Tangyuan (Glutinous Riceball). As the name suggests, it symbolises unity and togetherness - something that the children could reflect on as they talked about how Singapore can stand together as One United People.
