The title of our project this year is called - caring for our community. The children learn to care for the
around them in the environment, as well as the people around them.
We started off the project by going deeper into the
environment. The children learn to appreciate and take care of their surroundings. In collaboration with our Innovation Grant Project (IGP), the children used
resources provided by Parks and SSDB to delve deeper into the topic.
The children first learnt all about plants such as how to take care of them and why they are important. They even planted their own edible plants using the seeds provided. They remembered to water their plants daily and placed them in a spot with sunlight and enough air for the plant.
To commemorate our project, we also planted a shrub outside our school. The children had first-hand experience in digging, preparing the soil and planting them. They took turns daily to water them.
The children also made use of the Green Guardian programme by NParks. They did a series of activities to complete their bingo sheet. Through this, children gained deeper awareness on how to treat the plants and trees around them.
While our faunas are important, the biodiversity around us are important as well. The children were also introduced to global warming and climate change. They had a closer look through videos on how global warming affects animals in different places, such as polar bears losing their homes due to the melting of glaciers.
The children wanted to create a greater awareness In school, thus, our children created posters on their own to be pasted around school, They made use of what they had learn and drew the different ways children can play global warming. They also tapped on their prior knowledge from our June Holiday project - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle as one method to teach younger children on how they can play a part in saving the earth. We also took a fieldtrip to River Wonders to learn more about conservating the habitats of the different wildlife animals. There, there were introduced to the different fishes, what their eating habits were like and of course, the Pandas! They enjoyed looking and learning at the animals!
As we conclude part one of our project, our children are more aware of their roles and impact of their actions on mother earth. In our next story, our children will be delving more into caring for the people around them and in their community.
