Singapore is a bustling country for so many years and it continues to progress well after its independence 50 years ago. To build up this little island into such a developed country, not only to the Singaporean who has been working hard, let us not forget the foreign workers who have been contributing to the nation. As our school situates in the heart of Little India, the children have seen many migrant workers around the vicinity. This spark our thoughts when we discussed with the children about our Start Small Dream Big Project 2019.
The teachers created awareness among the children by researching more about these foreign workers. Where do they come from? What kind of jobs do they work? How do they contribute to Singapore? How do they build the flats and road for us? The children had a fruitful discussion among one another which aroused us to go deeper into how can we show our appreciation to them. We also came out with the title “Bless our Foreign workers” for this year SSDB project.
The children decided to bake cookies for them. How do we get the ingredient from? We invited the parents to donate some ingredients to us so that we can bake these cookies. We shared our ideas with the parents and the response was overwhelming! With kind donation from the parents, we got down with the task- bake cookies! Before we started to bake the cookies, the children wanted to design invitation cards for the foreign workers, we brainstormed together, from the layout to the colours of the card.
After the design, it was time to head out and look out for the foreign workers. We were excited when a few of the children spotted a few of them working at a site near our school.
The children helped to knead dough, use the shape cutter to cut the dough. The K2 children helped to put the cookie tray into the oven. In total, the children and teachers baked 3000 cookies together! After baking, the children got together to pack the cookies and we packed 300 bags of cookies. The children were very excited about it and they felt they had baked the most delicious cookies for these migrant workers.
On the 7th April, we gathered together at the school and they specially passed the cookies to the foreign workers who passed by. Many foreign workers were so happy to receive the cookies from the children and a few of them came up to say the cookies were delicious. We ended the day with songs performances presented by the children. We felt very accomplished after the event and glad to see how much effort the children had put into it.
