The exciting journey of our SSDB project brought our K2 Champs to discover that human activities such as water pollution & deforestation are causing some animals to become endangered category risk of extinction. One of the animals who live near the water is the penguin. Penguins are flightless birds that live on many continents in the southern Hemisphere, from Australia to Africa. Most reside in and around icy cold Antarctica. In our Singapore Zoological Garden, there is the endangered species of African Penguin. Penguins are affected by water pollution as this is where they hunt and feed their young. Champs also discovered that other underlying factors which put the penguins in danger include overfishing, plastic pollution, industrial development, invasive predators and climate change. Penguins parents take turns leaving to hunt at the ocean while another cares for the egg. They will take turns and exchange roles till the chick is hatched. We engaged Champs in discussion on “penguins”. Champs related that their parents also took care of them since birth. Champs also expressed interest to spread awareness on saving the penguins. We created posters, banners and drawings. We hope to spread the message of “Stop water pollution! Save our penguins!” to more people. At MindChamps Preschool @ Jurong West, we know that “Every effort counts , none too small!”.
