What is soil?
Do you know that there are 3 types of soil? Ask the children and they can tell you!
Children learned about the types of soil through an exploration activity where they took turns to play with the soil. As they were exploring, they learned about the textures and the physical properties of the 3 types of soil which are clay, loam and sand. After exploring, children went back to class to describe the types of soil and to make informed guesses on which is sand, clay or loam through a series of thought-provoking descriptions by their teachers.
Let’s try and see if you can figure it out by reading the sentences below and matching them with the type of soil:
-
When the wind blows, it can easily be swept away.
-
It usually has big chunks of soil clumped together.
-
We use this soil mostly for gardening.
