Kinderland Educare Services Pte Ltd and Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) first forged a meaningful partnership in 2016 Start Small, Dream Big Carnival. In line with our corporate social responsibility and through this collaboration, Kinderland children rallied their teachers and parents together to promote awareness and conservation of our native wildlife in Singapore and to inspire the community to care for them.
The project was chosen to nurture social entrepreneurism and as a platform for educational outreach to rally support and teach the public about conserving Singapore’s wildlife. The children were passionate about caring for animals, especially after their involvement in last year’s “Save The Pangolins” SSDB Project. Together with their teachers, the children brainstormed and determined the kind of business to set up that will generate interests in sales. Environmentally conscious and motivated to explore ways in which they can play an active role in protecting the environment, everyone decided to embark on this project. By sticking to a timeline where tasks had to be completed, and, getting support for their social entrepreneurism endeavours, the project became an authentic platform for children to learn to give back to the society.
To prepare children to understand their role in this year’s project, they had a workshop at the zoo where they learnt more about otters and the ways different agencies and the public work together to protect them. Understanding the challenges that otters faced living in Singapore’s urban landscape allowed the children to articulate the need of being respectful to these beautiful creatures and their natural habitat, at the Little Entrepreneur Sale. The children prepared for the big sale day by painting artworks, designing posters, packing their wares and role-playing transaction scenarios.
On Thursday, 20 July 2017 the children raised $1500 through the sale of their craft and wares outside MOE Cafeteria. Proceeds raised went to Wildlife Reserves Singapore to help save the Asian Small Clawed Otters and other endangered native wildlife. Through this event, children developed an awareness of communal effort and how compassion for people, creatures big or small, go a long way to making our world a better place to live in.
