Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) was launched in 2015 as a part of SG50 and President’s Challenge 15th Anniversary. It promotes character building by instilling the spirit of giving and values, such as care for others, humility, kindness and compassion. We, PCF Sparkletots Preschool @ Chua Chu Kang Blk10 launched SSDB in our centre on 28th May 2019.
A mass session was held at the centre premises showcasing the purposes of the SSDB through pictures on how the other centres participated in the mission, videos on untidy and clean Singapore and interactive sessions where children shared their views on their big dreams .
To reach our big dream ‘Clean Singapore’ we began with the small dream of ‘Zero litter bug’ around CCK neighbourhood. Children put in their efforts in giving back to the society by picking up litter around their neighbourhood. Later, during the show and tell session, children shared about the litter they picked up and ensured not to make their surroundings dirty. Children tapped on their prior knowledge about reduce reuse and recycle while sharing about the litter they picked up. Example, ‘Teacher, we can reuse the empty plastic bottles to grow plants’.

As a follow up of the SSDB launch children were actively involved in the 3R activities. They listened to stories on 3Rs. Children used the bottle caps, toilet rolls to create their own master piece on the topic transportation during their mother tongue session. They remembered to clean the mess once they completed their craft work.

N2 children designed their own bins and were actively involved in spotting the clean and messy room activity. The activities were meaningful as they advocated the value of maintaining cleanliness.

K1 children were asked to create posters based on topics ‘Zero Litterbug, Do Not Litter, Bin it!’ We also participated ‘Keep Singapore Clean’ under Npark as a collaboration with community partners , so as to keep our mission where children will play an active role in keeping the neighbourhood clean.
During the term holidays, parents discussed with their children about the topic before creating the poster. They brought their children around the neighbourhood for a walk and talk about the importance of keeping the environment clean. Children created posters and some even tried writing poems on keeping our environment clean.
During the show and tell session, children shared about the posters with their peers.
