Visiting the Dementia Facility at Grace Lodge on 18 July 2024

Following the enriching learning journey to the Punggol Library, where children and educators witnessed the community’s kindness and compassion in action through facilities designed for people with disabilities, the children gained a deeper appreciation for individuals who may differ from them. Emboldened by this experience, the children, a parent volunteer, and educators continued its journey of kindness and compassion, next visiting the Dementia’s Facility at Grace Lodge to spread love and understanding. The visit was on 18 July 2024(Thursday) at 10:00 am - 11:30 am, venue at Grace Lodge Dementia Facility. Participants involved are children, teachers, and a parent volunteer😄.

Objectives:

  1. To promote intergenerational bonding and understanding between children and dementia residents.

  2. To educate children about dementia and its effects.

  3. To encourage empathy, kindness, and social skills in children through interactive activities.

Activities:

  1. Welcome Song: The children warmed up the atmosphere by singing “I Love You” by Celine Dion, shaking hands with the elderly, and showcasing their love and respect.

  2. Skit: Big Bear, Little Bear, and Dementia: The children performed a heartwarming skit, teaching them that dementia is a condition characterized by forgetfulness, but love and care remain unchanged.

  3. Tote Bag Decoration: With guidance from children and a parent volunteer, the elderly decorated tote bags using acrylic markers, promoting creativity and social interaction.

Outcomes:

  1. Intergenerational Connections: The visit strengthened bonds between children and dementia residents, promoting understanding and empathy.

  2. Education on Dementia: Children gained a basic understanding of dementia, dispelling misconceptions and fostering compassion.

  3. Social Skills Development: Children developed essential social skills, such as communication, active listening, and teamwork.

During the activities, the children expressed joy and excitement in interacting with the elderly, showcasing their ability to connect with others. The elderly appreciated the children’s visits, citing improved mood and stimulation. The visit highlighted the importance of inclusive and intergenerational programs, promoting a sense of belonging.

Conclusion:

The Start Small Dream Big project continues to make a positive impact on both the children and dementia residents. This visit demonstrated the power of intergenerational connections, education, and empathy, promoting a sense of community and social responsibility. We look forward to bring this awareness of dementia to parents and provide opportunities to nurture these meaningful relationships by getting them to purchase the tote bag for a good cause. Proceeds will be donated to the Dementia Facility at Grace Lodge.
