It’s part 3 of our “Start Small Dream Big 2018: Reduce plastic waste, Save our watery friends” journey, and here the Nursery 1 and Nursery 2 students made use of their water bottles and upcycle it to make their very own planting pots. The students had an amazing and fun experience learning how they could upcycle water bottles and how plants grow. They start by learning about plants and their needs to grow into the plants that we see everywhere in Singapore. They even get to feel how soil feels like.
Next is creating their very own planting pots using recycled water bottles that they have at home. With the help of their teachers to cut and made draining holes and an opening in the bottles, the children were given art materials such as glitter glue, googly eyes, cyclophane paper to decorate their planting bottle pots to their own desires. They made sure not to over decorate their bottles to ensure that sunlight can still shine through.
IT’S PLANTING TIME!
The Nursery 1 children made use of vegetable roots such as carrots, onions and garlics to plant into their planting bottle pots that they have decorated as a group. The Nursery 2 children made use of planting seeds such as Thai Basil and Azura Blue and Chamomile.
When the plants show germination, which took up to 7-10 days, the children could bring it home to share and care for it together with their family. This project allows the children to learn more about their environment through planting and up-cycling plastics. It also teaches them a responsibility to care for their own plants. Stay tune to our next story to see what our little dreamers are up to next.
