In the next phase of our SSDB journey, we focused on helping children understand how to be a good friend.
First, they were introduced to growth mindset by looking at examples of individuals with Down Syndrome who persisted and worked hard to achieve their goals despite the challenges they faced. Children realized that just like individuals with down syndrome, they also have things that they can do and can’t do YET!
With the understanding that everyone is the same and everyone is different, children discussed about what they can do to help and learn from each other. Children role played different scenarios and thought about what they can do in each scenario to be a good friend. They realized that they could show care and kindness through their actions and words.
To extend their learning beyond the classroom, children brought home the Singa scratch card and did a ‘Kindness Pledge’ together with their families. Look out for our last post where we will share about how children put what they have discovered into action!
