Together, Let's Save Our Water!

Throughout this project, the children of SGM Little KiDZ have cultivated good water saving habits that is applicable both in school and at home. In April 2021, we conducted the Start Small Dream Big Launch Party with parents via Zoom in conjunction with the Centre’s Earth Day celebration. The children performed a mini musical that featured the Water Saving mascots - Water Wally and Water Sally. The whole school then participated in a “Water Conservation Week”, where they were introduced to why water is precious and ways to save water through the use of resources from Public Utilities Board (PUB). Children brought and painted their own plastic bottles to paint and used it to wash their hands for a period of 2 weeks. This implementation has taught them how to use water wisely by turning off the taps when soaping hand and controlling the amount of water that they use for washing. As part of our efforts to sustain these good habits in children, the teachers of the Nursery 2 to Kindergarten 2 children appointed “Water Hero Ambassadors” over a period of 3 weeks. These ambassadors were empowered to ensure that their peers continue the good habits that they’ve learned while washing their hands before and after meal times. They took pride in their role and delivered their duties well by encouraging their friends to use lesser water even when brushing their teeth. To further promote sustainability, we fostered a connection between school and home where children had to share these water saving habits with their family members and document one of the ways that they saved water at home. Children brought back their documentations to share with the class in a show-and-tell session. To conclude the project, children were directly involved in creating 30 water saving kits for the community. Each kit consists of postcards with pictures of water saving habits that the children drew along with a toothbrush and a cup too. These kits were then distributed to 30 residents of Rivervale Drive.  The children and teachers involved in this Start Small Dream Big project feels fulfilled that our ability to inculcate water saving habits in the school, home and community was successful. Indeed together, we can save out water!
