TBC’s “Think Sustainable, Act Responsibly” Project is an initiative carried out as part of the Care for the Environment mission, which aligns with the President’s challenge of “Many Helping Hands, Caring For Everyone” under the Start Small Dream Big campaign in 2023.
This year, we have opted to focus on environmental stewardship through our project “Think Sustainable, Act Responsibly.” By connecting our new project to our previous sustainability efforts, we recognise that a healthy environment is essential for our general well-being of life because it influences our air, water, food, and natural resources. Thus, “Think Sustainable, Act Responsibly” attempts to promote mindful activities and choices that prioritize environmental preservation and restoration.
To start with the project, parents were invited to Inventor’s Day event where their children’s sustainability projects were showcased through engaging eco-games and exciting performances. Building upon the inspiring success of our sustainability showcase, we have launched an exciting new venture to deepen the partnership between parents, children, and our ongoing sustainability efforts. This innovative project gives parents and children alike the opportunity to actively participate in important efforts that match with our common commitment to sustainability.
As we launched our project, children made class banners in order to visually reflect their aspirations for Singapore’s future. Their images of hands united in their dedication to recycling, minimizing waste, and maintaining greener Singapore.
Embracing outdoors as our classroom, we immersed the children in an exciting and hands-on recycling bin (Bloobin) activity, accompanied by a valuable lesson on recycling. The parents were as important in this joint effort, sharing images of their homes’ recycling nooks and partaking their children in recycling activities.
Through interactive and educational activities, we provided them with knowledge and tools for recycling and upcycling. Children embraced the concept of recycling, understanding that their small actions could make a big difference. They embarked on a journey of discovery, exploring the various types of recyclable materials and creating musical instruments and eco-robots sculptures.
In the future, we will carry out educational initiatives, take part in neighbourhood clean-ups, and work with families and the community to promote sustainable practices like recycling and waste reduction. On top of that, to have better home-school partnership, Sustainability Challenges were also extended to parents at home. For example, using reusable bags when grocery shopping and donating books and toys. When both children and parents participate, it ensures a multi-generational impact. By involving children from an early age, they develop a deep understanding of sustainability principles and are more likely to continue practicing them as they grow into adults. This multiplies the impact and creates a lasting legacy of sustainable living.
Other stakeholders also include collaboration with Preschool Market-Donation Drive and Sembcorp Partnership. Such collaborations with stakeholders are important as it brings expertise, real-world connections, role models, collaborative learning, local relevance, and community engagement to the educational process. It enriches children’s learning experiences, inspires action, and strengthens the collective effort towards a sustainable future.
“Sustainability is not a solo journey; it is a collective dance of countless individuals moving together towards a harmonious future”
