Sweetlands Childcare Yishun 458 Pte Ltd / Kindness Starts with Me

In year 2018, Sweetlands Yishun K1 & K2 children visited the ‘TOUCH Senior Citizen Centre’ as part of our Parents’ Day Celebration. Teachers, parents & children prepared, arranged & packed “goodie bags” containing healthy food such as apples, wholemeal biscuits, low-fat milk & healthy bar snacks contributed generously by our parents. The idea was to inculcate healthy eating habits, appropriate manners, empathy & important social skills for both the seniors & children alike.

This year 2019, still touching on community, caring & empathy for others, Sweetlands Yishun decided to embark on “Start Small Dream Big” project untitled “Kindness Starts with me”. As such, for this year’s Parents’ Day, we invited a speaker from SKM to give a talk to our parents on the importance of nurturing values of kindness, graciousness & empathy in children. They were also informed of our chosen project for SSDB. Together with the parents, teachers and children we planned & decided to bake cookies & pack them into “goodie bags” to distribute to our neighbours around the centre. While the main purpose of the baking event was for a worthy cause, parents had an opportunity to spend quality bonding time with their children in the process. Parents who were not able to make time to bake the cookies, nevertheless contributed generously to our “Fund Raising”. The funds were then donated to “Children’s Cancer Foundation”.

All teachers and children were involved in creating a big photo frame and many stalks of paper daisies (thanks to SKM) for our outdoor venture. So they set off with “goodie bags” of cookies and daisies, knocking on about 30 neighbourhood doors.

As a follow up on our Kindness event, teachers also made good use of the resources provided by Singapore Kindness Movement to deliver their message of Kindness & Courtesy. Sweetlands Yishun aims to instill the value of care, compassion and responsibility in the children towards the community from young.
