To instil a sense of responsibility and care for our environment, we thought, what other ways can we promote sustainability in our preschool aside from the usual recycling of materials?
We came up with different themes to promote sustainability, and two of them are: having a litter-free environment and reducing and having zero food waste.
Here, we have the Nursery children participating in litter picking. We also discussed why we have to keep our environment clean and free of litter; or what will happen to it if it is full of litter!
The children also revisited the different types of recyclables and did a simple sorting activity in class. We then collaborated with parents and invited them to find recyclable materials to recycle in the blue recycling bin.
At the start of the year, we also talked to children about the food they are eating - and where does the leftovers go? To the rubbish bin, and it is wasted. Instead, the children suggested to verbalise the portion of food they wanted during lunch time - “I want a small portion” “I want less food”. Here are the K1 children creating an awareness and reminder poster to not waste food!
