Art and craft supplies do not have to come from a store. Some of the best craft materials are just outside our front and back door. Natural art and craft materials such as flowers, leaves, twigs, bark, seed pods and stones can be found in almost any street, any park and in any city all around the world. Hence, as we focus on “Zero Waste” as part of our SSDB activity for caring for our environment, we get our K1 children to use natural materials such as leaves and twigs to use in their craft works. The following photographs shows Kindergarten one children gathering leaves and twigs outside our Centre. Photographs also showed them using the natural materials to create their animal crafts.
In addition, the teacher talked to children about “Zero Waste” – Zero Waste is a set of principles focused on waste prevention that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused. The goal is for no trash to be sent to landfills, incinerators or the ocean.
The teacher asked children, ‘How do we care for our environment?’ ‘What should we do in order to protect our environment?’ One example is to go outdoor to pick some fallen leaves for our craft works. It is also one way to care for our environment by not getting supplies from stores so as to prevent waste such as disposing the packaging. The children also understood the concept of not wasting food. Some of them mentioned, ‘If you cannot finish the food you may keep and eat them later instead of throwing them away.
