This is the first year we are participating in the “Start Small Dream Big”(SSDB) project. We conceptualized our SSDB project to focus on “Caring for our Ecosystem” and “Caring for others” with the plan for our SSDB project in mind.
We decided to make use of this launch party and start off by showcasing some of activities we have done so far.
We have always inculcated to the children the importtance of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). With that in mind, we planned for an experiential learning trip to our neighbourhood NTUC supermarket.
Parents and PSG ( parent support group) members also jioned us on this trip.
During the trip, the children were taught how to reduce the usage of plastic bags by shopping with their own recycle bags. The children bought fruits at the supermarket for their own “ Fruity Day “ consumption.
The children were encouraged to share this experience with their family members and impress upon them the benefits of reducing plastic bags usage.
Prior to our launch party, we had also planned activities for the World Water Day. In conjunction with the theme of “ Make Every Drop Count “ for Singapore World Water Day 2018. The children were taught different water saving tips. The children also design a “World Water Day “ poster based on different ways and scenarios where water can be conserved.
Activities were also planned to revolve around the theme of “ Earth Day “ 2018. This year’s “ Earth Day “ theme is ‘End plastic pollution’. Based on the concepts of the 3Rs, the children were taught and prompted to come up with ideas and suggestions on how to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic materials in their daily lives.
The children also learned to make games and crafts out of different plastic materials.
We also embarked on a mission to encouraged our parents, their friends or neighbours to donate unwanted used children’s books and old clothes to our centre.
Through this exercise, the children will learn how to take better care of library books in their classrooms and also learn how to repair the torn pages or covers of the donated used books. All appropriate donated used books will eventually be incorporated into the centre’s library collection. On the other hand, the children will also learn how to sort our and pack up the donated old clothes to be subsequently donated to an appropriate organization. Old clothes that are unsuitable for donation will be cut up and the materials used for making teaching aids and learning corner games.
Photo snippets of each of the above mentioned activity as well as all the art and crafts made during each activity were showcased during the launch party.
We officially launched our SSDB project entitled “Little hands can help to care for the earth” on 26th April 2018. we also used this opportunity to spread the message of “Reduce, Reuse ,Recycle” to the parents attending the launch party.
Prior to the Launch Party, the children make use of their creativity to design and make flowers from plastic bags. The flowers were given to all parents attending the launch party.
The launch party kicked off with the children and parents, reciting the SSDB pledge as well as a “song and dance” routine put up by the K1 and K2 children.
Following the performance, a group of K2 children gave the parents a presentation on what they have learned so far on the needs and benefits of the 3Rs, conserving water, caring for the Earth , etc. The children also gave the parents a short introduction on the projects and crafts that will be showcasing at the launch party.
The launch party ended with the children and their parents teaming up to design and decorate their SSDB presidential challenge card and their kindness movement tote-bag.
