This year our Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) project focus on “Zero Plastic” in the ocean and the theme for this year is “Our Choices Matter”. As we all know for past few decades, humans have managed to dump tons upon tons of garbage into the ocean. Of the most devastating elements of this pollution is that plastics takes thousands of years to decay. As a result, fish and other sea creatures are becoming intoxicated. Consequently the toxins from the plastics have entered the food chain, threatening human health. In the most polluted places in the ocean, the mass of plastic exceeds the amount of plankton six times. This is a huge problem of pollution in the oceans. It is upsetting that more of clean up effort is not taking place.
At times plastic bags and other trash were seen being thrown everywhere at the beach instead of in the trash bins and these plastic bags may end up ‘rolling’ over to the ocean. Thus by reducing the use of plastic bags, it will help to reduce pollution of ‘plastic/ plastic bags’ in the ocean.
As a school we would like to bring awareness of this pollution in the ocean to our children. What are the little things they can do to contribute in reducing plastic/ plastic bags in the ocean which is the essence of this start small dream big project is all about. We cannot do everything but we can do something.
We did our soft launch on 16 April 2021 at 10am:-
- K1 - Showcase a banner they did containing “Clean” and “Dirty” ocean
K2 - Children explaining the banner and the sea aquarium
N2 - Showcase the sea aquarium they did
We also interviewed some of the parents regarding their views about the ocean and what they think we can do to help reduce the pollution of plastic/ plastic bags in the ocean.
