SSDB PROJECT 2021: FOOD IS LOVE COLLABORATING WITH THE COMMUNITY TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT FOOD INSECURITY AND FOOD WASTAGE

Overview of our project:

Our SSDB Project aims to improve children’s and parents’ efforts to raise awareness on food insecurity and wastage in Singapore. We plan to achieve this by working with FoodBank Singapore, a non-profitable organization that seeks to provide food aid to less fortunate Singaporeans. We hope to render our service through food donation drives and virtual collaboration with FoodBank. Through this project, we want to raise awareness among young children about the importance of food, and ensure that children are aware that there are many people in Singapore who are in need of food. We also aim to cultivate the culture of no food wastage in school, and as well as home, with the support from parents.

SSDB VIRTUAL LAUNCH PARTY(19/4/2021) :

Our centre launched the Start Small Dream Big project on the 19 April 2021 with our K2 children and parents. Parents and children showed immense enthusiasm as we launched this project in school.

Virtual Programme with FoodBankSG(15/6/2021) :

We had a Virtual interaction with Ms Jessie from FoodBankSG where she educated children on food wastage and how we can help and support those people in need of food. She also highlighted that huge amount of food is being wasted in Singaopore. She shared various key points which made the children understand that food is important and we should not waste food.

Poster making (23/6/2021):

We decided to host a Food donation drive outside the centre. We created posters to be put up outside the school for the Food Donation drive!

We set up a Food Donation Drive station outside our school. Food containers were placed and flyers were given to parents. Parents were informed that we will be collecting food items from 16-23 July 2021 and these food items will be donated to FoodBankSG. Parents were thrilled and showed their support in their contribution. Our Teachers also showed their support by contributing to our Food donation drive.

With all the food items collected, now it was time to pack them up in boxes. We had lots of fun checking the expiry date on the food items and packing them accordingly into the cardboard boxes. We arranged the food items neatly, ready for delivery.

All the food items were delivered to FoodBankSG on 3 Aug 2021. We felt so proud as we have accomplished our mission to donate food items to the people in need.

We had an online Zoom session with Ms Jessie from FoodbankSG on 3 Aug 2021 who thanked children for their contribution. She also asked children to share on their experiences about the food donation drive. Children had immense joy and pleasure as they shared their feelings about the food donation drive. Children shared that they feel satisfied and happy as they have contributed their part. Ms Jessie also mentioned that children, as well as their parents, can continue contributing to FoodBankSG by donating Food items in the FoodBank Boxes located in many of the shopping malls around Singapore. Children were thrilled that they can continue their journey to feed the people in need.

We had our SSDB Finale on 4 August 2021. Children had immense joy and pleasure as they had completed their SSDB Project. They felt proud as the food collected was donated to people who are in need, and it has been a great help to them, especially in this crucial period of Covid-19 Pandemic. Children also learnt the importance of food, and food is such a valuable thing that they need to appreciate. Through this journey, children got to understand that there are a lot of families in need of food in Singapore, and we can also play our part in donating some food items to them. Children also got to learn about food wastage, and pledged that they will not waste food in near future. This entire journey has impacted the children in such a meaningful and positive way.

Ending Note: “Teamwork makes a dream work”, as such, I had a great opportunity to take in this wonderful project to raise awareness about Food insecurity and Food wastage. Parents and teachers gave their full support to my instructions and requests in accomplishing the goal of this project. I also had great pleasure working closely with my Centre principal Mdm Stella who guided me throughout this project and supported my ideas and visions that I had for this project. Children’s enthusiasm and parents support in this project gave me the confidence to complete the project with a positive note despite many restrictions due to Covid-19. We feel proud that we were able to help needy families in this Covid-19 pandemic.

Overall, I’m satisfied and overwhelmed with happiness by this entire journey of the SSDB project titled: Food is Love❤️
