SSDB Project 2020 - Gratitude and Appreciation

Our SSDB project 2020 focused on teaching pupils to appreciate and show gratitude to the people in their lives, starting from their parents, grandparents, siblings and extending to people in their social circle and society. Their thoughts and feelings will be consolidated into a ‘Book of Appreciation’ at the end of the project and it will be something that they can always reflect on.

The project became more meaningful in the midst of a COVID-19 pandemic when pupils saw how people from different walks of life came together to overcome the challenges and pondered on their roles as well as ways to show gratefulness.

To kick start the project, pupils made ‘thank you’ cards for healthcare workers at Singapore General Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Pupils learnt about the challenges faced by the healthcare workers and the effort they have put in to keep Singapore safe. By showing our appreciation, we hope to encourage and spur them on.

This was followed by the learning of our SSDB cheer with fun actions to prepare for the SSDB launch. Pupils were enthusiastic and excited and they were able to do it after a few practices.

Here is our Cheer:

1,2,3,4, we’ve a big heart though we are small.   5,6,7,8, we know how to appreciate.                        8,7,6,5, we want to thank those in our lives. 4,3,2,1, we want to thank our dads and moms!   We want to thank our teachers and friends!       And many more who have lent helping hands! That’s what we’ll be from feet to head.              We will be someone as GREAT!

After the Circuit Breaker was announced, the SSDB project became part of our home based learning. Parents participated in the making of the book through colouring and decorating of the different pages as well as learning and reciting the cheer with the children.

When pupils were back from the Circuit Breaker, they continued with the project by contemplating and showing appreciation for people around them such as their friends, school auntie, bus uncle and extending it to our frontline heroes, the transportation officers, hawkers, cleaners, safe distancing ambassadors who provided food and kept us safe while we stayed at home during CB.

As a closure to this year’s project, pupils did a short presentation to share their thoughts. The learning journey does not end here as pupils will continue to hold and display these values of gratitude and appreciation in their lives ahead.
