The day that we have been waiting for is finally here! On 5th April 2018, our Nursery, K1 and K2 children at My First Skool at Fajar were all excited to begin our adventurous Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) journey for the year 2018 as we plan to create another year-round of fond memories together! We are very delighted to share with you our second year of SSDB Project with our children, enjoy the post!
For our SSDB project this year, our school has decided to use the motto “Caring for Others Together” as our guiding principle. As part of caring for Mother Earth, we aim to encourage greater consideration and compassion among students by getting them to be more actively engage in environmental issues. Thus, our Nursery, K1 and K2 children participated in hosting their own recycling fashion show to raise awareness about environmental sustainability.
The recycling fashion show was designed to challenge the way our children think about trash and to engage the children in creative uses of waste, that is intended to inspire our children to preserve and protect the environment by rethinking recycling. Our children were allowed to help themselves to recyclable materials to use in their own ways to create clothing from recycled materials in a runway style fashion show. Our children strut their stuff on the catwalk in outfits made entirely of recycled materials for this fashion show.
Through SSDB, our Nursery, K1 and K2 children were able to reflect on how their everyday actions have an impact on the environment, and encourage them to play an active role in protecting the environment. The children realized that uses for recyclable materials are only limited by imagination. Apart from creating clothes made from recycled materials, our children found out that recyclable materials can be used in the art area, the dramatic play area, the writing center, the block area, and anywhere else our children find them useful.
To end off the event, our children promoted the event by singing and dancing along with the Saving Gaia song, ‘Save My World’! The launch party went well and we were glad to see our children and staff enjoying themselves!
Our next small step would be involving families from our centre to join us for a fundraising carnival to help the less fortunate. Our children have brainstormed for a number of meaningful activities to be carried at the fundraising carnival. Stay tuned to our next story …
