The coronavirus pandemic took the entire world by storm. From the first reported case in Singapore back in late January 2020, our brave essential workers have fought to keep Singapore safe and worked hard to keep our community functioning.
We brainstormed lots of different types of essential workers. These are the essential workers the entire school gave thanks to!
PG: Bus Drivers
N1: Healthcare Workers
N2: Hawkers
K1: Healthcare Workers and Supermarket Workers
K2: Delivery Workers
To get the K1 children to understand first-hand the struggles of the selected essential workers, we had a supermarket dramatic play and a healthcare worker dress up activity.
Supermarket Dramatic Play
Children shared their thoughts about how they felt tired from restocking the shelves and scanning the food (even though they had fun 😝).
Donning Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Activity
Although they felt excited that they would be donning the modified PPE attire to carry out their daily activities for 15 minutes, children did highlight how their hands felt hot in the vinyl (latex-free) gloves. They heaved a sigh of relief when time was up and they could remove the PPE.
With such experiences on hand, I am glad the children could comprehend and share their thoughts on the essential workers’ daily grinds.
Mask Pouch Activity
To appreciation our brave essential workers, what better way to shown appreciation than a gift from the heart? The K1 and K2 children decorated two mask pouches (one pouch per child for PG-N2) which were handed out to them in appreciation of their diligence and commitment to their job and community.
All the teachers set off to hand out the mask pouches on our half-day centre closure on 7th August 2020.
Upon school resumption, children were shown photographs of the essential workers they received their mask pouches. 🎉
Essential Workers Appreciation Poster Show and Tell
To end off this amazing journey of appreciation, the K1 children worked on a poster at home with their parents to present to their classmates their thoughts of essential workers. Their show and tell was conducted on 28th August 2020.
We will definitely take this learning experience with us in our hearts. Thank you to all essential workers!
