Moving on to the final journey of our SSDB project on reducing food wastage, the children worked with the Food Bank Singapore to pack the food bundles that was bought by the funds that was raised during the Charity Bazaar. Children and parents went down to Jia Ying Senior Activity Centre to work together to pack the foods into bundles. Then children teamed up with a parent volunteer to go to the residents’ home to distribute the food bundles. This experience allows children to have a better understanding on how important their role is in reducing food waste and helping those in need. It also provides them with the opportunity to interact with the residents that and exchange casual greetings.
Through the journey of the project, the children learnt about the huge impact food waste contributes towards the Semakau Landfill, They pledged to continue to reduce food waste and work together with their families and community towards zero waste by reducing, reusing and recycling. The children incorporated this topic into their inquiry to find out how they can help to reduce food waste, and how it can affect the earth we live in. The children also learnt that to reduce food waste, we can also use compost bin. Thus reducing the usage of landfills, and burning of the waste, which could affect the air that we breathe.
This project allows children to be more aware of their actions towards food waste and also be thankful for what they have now and start small in trying to make the changes towards saving the earth.
