In conjunction with Parents’ Day celebration, we had our Start Small Dream Big 2018 Launch Party on 16 May 2018. This is to raise awareness on “Love Food, Stop Wastage”. Did you know that food waste accounts for about 10 percent of the total waste generated in Singapore? And only 14% is recycled? The rest of it is disposed of at the waste-to-energy (WTE) plants for incineration.
The amount of food waste generated in Singapore has increased by about 40 percent over the past 10 years and is expected to increase with our growing population and economic activity. Besides the effort required to collect and dispose of it, food waste contaminates recyclables and compromises recycling efforts. It causes odour irritant and vermin multiplying if not managed properly.
To support this cause, parents and children were made aware on how to manage food wastage. Parents amd children pledged to save food on pledge cards. A home-task activity was given to parents and children to work together as a family, to keep track on their food wastage.
Parents have embraced this collaboration with great enthusiasm. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents and children for their commitment towards pledging on loving food and stopping wastage.
